CALIFORNIA LEGAL HELP CENTER - MENU FOODS
14 Cat, Dog Deaths Linked to Menu Foods, FDA Says
Quick Facts:
- Thirteen cats and one dog died after eating products made at Menu Foods Income Fund's plants in Kansas and New Jersey.
- Nine of the animals that died were used in Menu Foods taste tests, while the remainder were pets owned by individuals.
- The products are packaged in cans and pouches under numerous brand names and are marketed nationwide by many pet food retailers including Ahold USA Inc., Kroger Company, Safeway, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., PetSmart, Inc., and Pet Valu, Inc.
- Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said that 10 deaths were reported last week.
- Menu Foods recalled canned food sold under brands such as Iams and Eukanuba and retailers' own labels.
- The food was tainted by a shipment of wheat gluten.
- Menu Foods, an income trust, fell 15 cents, or 3.6 percent, to C$4 on the Toronto Stock Exchange today. The price has plunged 54 percent since the day before the recall.
- The recall, which amounts to about 1 percent of the pet food sold in the U.S., will cost Menu Foods C$30 million ($25.5 million) to C$40 million, the company said.
